Understanding #yesastripper

The #yesastripper hashtag was created by a stripper in rebuttal to pole dancers using #notastripper. Strippers found #notastripper to be frustrating, considering pole dancers have been dressing and dancing like strippers, and simultaneously, try to distance themselves from stripping.

These types of actions harm the stripper community, as it is created a heirarchy of pole dancing, as if doing it as stripper is somehow "bad" but dancing erotically and sensually as a pole dancer is "good". This is the type of division that has been happening since the boom and rise of pole dancing around the world.

Strippers and Sex Workers would like more solidarity from pole dancers, and acknowledment that pole dancing was created by strippers. When pole dancing was blowing up, it was strippers in the studios teaching pole dancing, because those were the only people who knew what they were doing at the time.

This brand is named after this movement. We did not invent the movement, but we do our best to maintain community awareness of each other and to raise awareness with the pole dance community on how best to interact with strippers.
